In 2007 Quebec's Spirit of the Forest unleashed an epic debut upon the masses which assured that they'd be a band to keep an eye on in the future. This album was "A Brew of Lightening and Terror". The follow up was released just last month. As far as the debut goes, I have to admit that I think it's one of the best pure black metal releases of the last few years. I couldn't wait to post this one!
Being a man of 36 years old, I often yearn for those glory days of the early 90's when black metal music was really coming into it's own. Mailing off those old paper order forms from Moribund, Necropolis and Full Moon Productions with half (or more) my weeks paycheck just to get my hands on the latest, most obscure, evil, hateful music I could find at the time. Spirit of the Forest is a band that reminds me of the best era of music in my life. Just straight-forward black metal that sets a cold atmosphere of those desolate frozen forests you'd see on 80% of all album covers at the time. The musicianship is outstanding and the production is flawless for what it is. One thing that really sticks out is the way the bass guitar comes out in the mix. Not only is it completely audible, but the bass lines fuckin' destroy! Drums are mixed perfectly as well and the drummer is very versatile. The twin guitars harmonize nicely with one another and have the right amount of biting aggression when necessary. The vocals are pretty much what one would expect from black metal made around 20 years prior to "A Brew of Lightening and Terror" with some death-like growls thrown in on occasion.
Spirit of the Forest's debut is pure black metal perfection in every sense. If we gave ratings around here, I'd give it 10/10.
